A couple years ago I murdered my Harbor Frieght trailer by overloading it. I had long since gotten my money’s worth out of it, so I drilled off the ID plate, took off my license plate, and put it on the curb for the scrappers.

Ever since then, I’ve been looking for a very cheap trailer to replace it. I’ve come close a couple times, but the cheap ones are always either too far away, or get scooped up before I can get to them.

This one was posted two nights ago for $75, 2-1/2 miles from my house . I messaged immediately that I could pick it up the following morning and was fine with the price, but didn’t hear back. Oh well.

Last night the seller responded that the first guy never showed up, did I still want it. I did, so we arranged a time for this afternoon. It was in a little worse shape than I expected, but the seller had already decided $50 was the right price. That was good by me. We swapped cash, signed two copies of a bill of sale, and I hooked it up.

Immediately after getting it home, I posted the roof box for sale. Within two hours that was gone. Unfortunately for not as much money as I’d hoped, because I discovered this crack in it.

Oh well, I got $10 for it, and it’s out of my way. Now I’m only $40 into the trailer, and while removing the box I found this little Snap On screw driver. I love free tools, and free good tools are even better!!

So here’s the trailer as it sits now. I haven’t yet decided if I’m going to fill in the gaps in the deck, or just put a new deck on it. The seller removed the build sticker from the trailer, before selling it to me as “home made,” so I’m going to put my old trailers vin plate onto it.

The left side taillight is busted, but Harbor Frieght recalled my old trailer for not having bright enough lights, and sent me a replacement LED light kit. Which I never put on, and still have.

Register it as a home made trailer, then if you get any other trailers you can just move the one plate among them as all the “same” homemade trailer instead of getting multiple regs.

That was mighty lucky! One of my best craigslist scores was a decent Thule rooftop box.

That box has been so useful. It’s been on multiple camping trips and was used to carry around the pole vaulting standards for two season when I was coaching track. We were using the local high school’s track and high jump pit, but they wouldn’t let us use their standards.

Having a decent trailer is the only way I can really justify not having a truck. I’ve hauled everything from rock to mulch to my mower s and even drainage pipe in the little trailer I inherited from my mom. It’s fantastic!

If I didn’t have this, I would be looking at getting something similar. In fact, I’d like this one a bit better if the sides were removable.

That's a good idea. If I didn't already have a registration and plate from the old trailer, I'd do that. Having the existing one saves me $95.

I even have a truck, but having a trailer is still super useful sometimes. I’m thinking now that I’m going to flip this one, and put the money towards a 4x8 with removable sides and a ramp.

If my truck were to die, I could probably get away with a car and a trailer. Unless we buy another camper.
